    Leaf Peeping Adventure

    Durango, Colorado

    Purgatory Resort    SeptEMBER 16-21, 2021

    1 spot available

Trip Leader: Bluebird Jackie Warren  407-314-0207  Email: jwa407@aol.com

By the late 19th century, thanks to successful mining in the San Juan Mountains, southwestern Colorado needed a real town. The Denver & Rio Grande Railway chose the site of present-day Durango, on the banks of the Animas River, to build its depot. The railroad officially made its way into the Animas Valley in August 1881 and folks like us started to flock to the area to enjoy outdoor adventures and lovely fall colors.

It’s OUR turn to beat the heat in Florida and be amazed by the quaking Aspen, breathtaking mountain views, and the rich old west history.  We’ll be based at the condos at Purgatory Village and use rental vehicles to venture out for our daily sightseeing and activities.  Not only does Durango have history it has some great restaurants and shops downtown.

We’ll enjoy a leisurely trip on the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad which is still completely coal-fired and steam-operated, visit Mesa Verde National Park, conquer the Inferno Mountain Coaster, and spend some time on the water at Twilight Lake. There will be some hiking, a hot spring visit, and the opportunity to zipline or tour the backcountry by jeep.

LODGING: 5 nights at the Purgatory Resort, condo units with bathrooms for each room and comfortable kitchen, dining, and living rooms. There are hot tubs and a great outdoor pool with mountain views.

FLIGHT: United Airlines – Round trip to Durango (via Denver)

Marvel at ancient wonders and modern culture during this once in a lifetime trip. Check Machu Picchu off your bucket list!  Immerse yourself in Peru!

      Lima

Along the Pacific coast of Peru lies Lima, a cosmopolitan capital city and anachronistic melting pot of Spanish Colonial architecture built directly over ancient Incan foundations. We’ll discover some of the country’s best museums, churches, historic plazas and bustling shopping areas—including a private tour of the famously yellow Baroque Church of San Francisco.  We’ll also visit the Archaeological Museum, which offers an overview of Peru’s fascinating history, from its superb array of Incan artifacts to impressive collections of ceramics, gold, and textiles.

      Machu Picchu

Never found by the Spanish conquistadors, Machu Picchu was known only to local people until Yale professor Hiram Bingham was led to the ruins in 1911 and described it for the world in his book The Lost City of the Incas. Located on a mountaintop 8,000 feet above sea level   in the Peruvian Andes, the city was built with residential, military, and religious areas. Our small group will visit the spectacular ruins twice, allowing us for a deeper exploration of the site after the crowds are gone. We’ll witness the Intihuatana (a sundial-like megalith), the Temple of the Sun, and the Room of the Three Windows in Machu Picchu’s Sacred District.

      Cuzco & the Sacred Valley

With an elevation of 10,900 feet, Cuzco is literally (and figuratively) breathtaking. The Inca called it the “navel of the world,” as it was the center of their universe and the premiere city in their culture. The ancients may be gone now, but they left behind an abundance of remarkable ruins in the towering Andean peaks and deep within Sacred Valley. We’ll discover Cuzco’s ancient sites, explore modern Andean culture with a visit to Chinchero, a weaving village high in the mountains, as well as take a rafting trip the Urubama River and a train ride through the Sacred Valley.

PRICE INCLUDES: Includes international airfare / airport transfers/ government taxes / fees and airline fuel charges, all land transportation and 2 internal flights, accommodations for 10 nights, 24 meals (daily breakfast, 8 lunches and 6 dinners – including 1 home-hosted lunch), 6 small group activities, gratuities for local guides / drivers / luggage porters, exploring in a small group of 16 people!
