Happy New
Year to all Orlando Ski and Travel Club members
and friends! Hope your Holidays were full of good cheer! Our ski trip
destinations are looking mighty snowy! Our early pre-holiday trip to
Aspen was a HUGE success with a record snow fall to welcome us! The
beautifully lit resort really set the mood for Holiday spirit! Plan
now to join us for next December’s early season pre-holiday trip!
OSTC’s Holiday
Social at Ale House was also quite festive with great comradery
amongst our members while also once again generously supporting the
Marines Toys for Tots! OSTC members are always so very
generous with gifts and cash to help the Marines annually, makes me
feel proud, thank you so much!
Our members
enjoyed a complimentary beverage sponsored by the Club, enhanced
foods, two decadent cakes in a festive atmosphere! Thank you to Peter
Glenn, Winter Club Ski and Ale House for their Door Prize donations!
For local
events, we had two excellent rendezvous! First, we had an
energetic bike ride on West Orange Trail starting in historic
Downtown Winter Garden, followed by another interesting historic tour
of the downtown, guided by our own Club Historian! Of course,
appropriately for OSTC, we concluded the tour at the
Crooked Can Brewery where we recapped the history over a variety of
locally brewed beers!
Next, we
ushered in Christmas on bicycles after dark with some 300 other
bicyclists on a ride thru College Park, singing carols and enjoying
festive Christmas lights! It was a BLAST! All the bikes were decked
out with Christmas lights and the rider’s outfits were each quite
unique! For 2019 I hope OSTC will have 50 riders, we’ll plan a
ski theme!
As we slide
into ski/board season, I hope everyone has signed up for at least one
trip with OSTC! If you missed out and the trip
you wanted is full, I encourage you to sign up on the Wait List
and/or contact the Trip Leader. Life happens, and cancelations occur
so jump on the list NOW! First come, first serve!
Ski Trips
Our January
Florida Ski Council Trip to Big Sky will be our opportunity to defend
our cherished GOLD CUP, as OSTC was the fastest racers in the
Council last year! We’ve got two race clinics scheduled, if you’re on
the trip be sure to join us for this invaluable training experience!
Let’s make sure to bring the GOLD home again!
Make the
commitment for 2019 to be your year to be ACTIVE with your club, both
as a participant and a leader! It’s YOUR club, it needs you to be
involved! Lifelong friendships are formed here! We have FUN! We’re
ACTIVE! Come ski, board, bike ride, learn local history, hike, ride
horses, kayak, do elbow curls with us! Perhaps there’s a local event
you’ve been anxious to participate with. Let us help you organize
& advertise it thru the Club then you can enjoy the pleasure of
leading a group to join you for the fun! Contact our VP of Year-Round
Activities with your ideas!

FIS
ALPINE
SKIING RULES
The FIS rules are comparable to international road
traffic regulations. Every skier and snowboarder should be aware of
these FIS rules in order to protect yourself and others from
potential dangers and to avoid accidents on ski slopes.
1. Respect for others
A skier or snowboarder must behave in such a way that he does not
endanger or prejudice others.
2. Control of speed and skiing or
snowboarding
A skier or snowboarder must move in control. He must adapt his speed
and manner of skiing or snowboarding to his personal ability and to
the prevailing conditions of terrain, snow and weather as well as to
the density of traffic.
3. Choice of route
A skier or snowboarder coming from behind must choose his route in
such a way that he does not endanger skiers or snowboarders ahead.
4. Overtaking
A skier or snowboarder may overtake another skier or snowboarder
above or below and to the right or to the left provided that he
leaves enough space for the overtaken skier or snowboarder to make
any voluntary or involuntary movement.
5. Entering, starting and moving
upwards
A skier or snowboarder entering a marked run, starting again after
stopping or moving upwards on the slopes must look up and down the
slopes that he can do so without endangering himself or others.
6. Stopping on the piste
Unless absolutely necessary, a skier or snowboarder must avoid
stopping on the piste in narrow places or where visibility is
restricted. After a fall in such a place, a skier or snowboarder must
move clear of the piste as soon as possible.
7. Climbing and descending on foot
A skier or snowboarder either climbing or descending on foot must
keep to the side of the piste.
8. Respect for signs and
markings
A skier or snowboarder must respect all signs and markings.
9. Assistance
At accidents, every skier or snowboarder is duty bound to assist.
10. Identification
Every skier or snowboarder and witness, whether a responsible party
or not, must exchange names and addresses following an accident.
Remember your
helmet and back-protectors!

WINTER
GARDEN
On Saturday, December 8, the Orlando Ski and Travel
Club had a holly jolly time in Winter Garden. Opportunities to
join with other members and their guests ranged from a high exertion
bike ride on the West Orange Trail, to a historical stroll through downtown,
to a quick visit to the amazing farmers market, to the laid-back
brews and taste sensations at Crooked Can Brewery and the Plant
Street Market. Regardless of which activities everyone
participated in, the real joy came from spending time locally to grow
friendships with folks that we ski and travel with.
