by Kathryn Hardage, Trip Leader

Guten Tag! In last month’s OSC Newsletter I talked about the entertainment and food side of Austria, there is so much to tell, I wanted to share another side of the trip. The story of respect and benevolence!

Typically during ski trips there is a lot of bonding within the group, both with persons who have known each other for years and those who are meeting for the first time. On the International trips, the bond seems even stronger. We are all depending on each other in a country not our own, often with a language we do not understand.

First off, at Frankfurt airport, everyone was looking out for each other in the TSA line, trying to help make sure all Orlando peeps got onto the plane after the stressful security line.

Then as Trip Leader for Orlando I felt a strong bond with the Trip Leader from Sarasota, staying in our same hotel. Next with Trip Leaders from Tampa & Miami during the bus ski excursions, we respected each other’s opinion to make decisions together!

I could see Orlando trippers bonding with each other, creating a sense of “family”. Trippers between clubs were also bonding, all showing respect for each other and extending benevolence; even when they were tired, or had other plans pending. When my roommate broke her arm on the mountain & the snowmobile ski patrol sped off with her, all 14 who were skiing with us waited a long wait to make sure I found her and could get her off the mountain.

The actions of kindness, acceptance, respect and benevolence were numerous; too many to list names. Yet there was one very special bond that was created which I wish to share with all OSC membership, between OSC tripper, Jack Hagen and the Austrian Father (2nd out of 4 generations of owner/operators of our hotel).

I believe, Jack’s career has been in the Fire Fighting industry. Somehow he learned of the Father’s association with the volunteer Fire Dept in Zell am See and presented him with a NY World Trade Center pen. The Father was extremely touched and honored.

A few nights later at dinner, the Father made a grand entrance into the Dining Room, zooming in on Jack. Jack saw him coming and immediately jumped to his feet. Though neither spoke each other’s language, no words were needed. The Father proudly presented Jack with a Fire Fighter’s ball cap from Zell am See. Jack saluted the Father and the room erupted in applause. A very special moment of respect and benevolence!
