Snowmass 2016

“A Long-Time Favorite”

The week of February 6-13, 2016 turned out to have historical levels of snowfall for the Orlando Ski Club's ski trip to the Snowmass-Aspen Resort. So far the season total is 158 inches; average base depth is 54 inches where 14 inches fell three days before we arrived. This made for incredible groomed runs each and every day we skied not to mention the bluebird skies that adorned us as well. Even though a mechanical caused the "PINEAPPLE" flight through Chicago to arrive three hours late on Saturday, all skiers/boarders had received their lift tickets, rentals, and we're ready to ski/ride on Sunday, February 7, 2016. On Sunday night, the Super Bowl 50 Après Ski Kick-Off was attended by 54 OSC travelers who received a drink and appetizers while the game played heavily supported by these Bronco Fans: Jeanne Meyer, Paula O’Shea and Joy Ewertz to name a few. BRONCOFANS.JPG,IvyAndColes.jpg, caroynbetsyheather.jpg, AlKarenMair.Jpg. After the Broncos won so did Edward Quinn, John Loftice, Bob Cole and "Bonsai" Bob Barnes when we "showed(gave) them the money" that they won from the football pool.

On Tuesday, February 9, 2016, Fat Tuesday, the OSC showed up in full Mardi Gras Regalia at the Base Camp Grille Après Ski for a drink and appetizers for 40 travelers: Weegie Henry was the best decked out Mardi Gra’er:  MGWeegie.jpg, MGBrianRpbinBetsyJeff.jpg, MGTripleaders.jpg, MGColesNancyMikeMikeIvy.jpg

On Thursday, February 11, 2016, we all met slope side and skied down to the location to take our group photo. Also on Thursday the Haul-Ass Ladies (coined by Ivy) and “the Boys” sleighed the 6-mile LONGSHOT run that includes a ¼ mile hike so much so that two of them, Carolyn McMillian and Betsy Miller, skied it a second time pummeling it into submission! BRAVO!TheMenLongshotFinishers.jpg, PaulaJeanneCarolynHeatherBetsy.jpgand then later that day Kathryn Hardage lavished two drinks for each traveler and appetizers at the “Venga, Venga” Après Ski: thanks Kathryn! We had plenty of time to go over the ups and downs of our ski adventures:KathyLindaRobinWeegie.jpg, KathyDavidEdRobb.jpg, DonTerriLynnRichard.jpg

On Friday, February 12, Nancy Thigpen, a longtime OSC member organized a Farewell Après Ski at Venga, Venga that was well attended: Thanks Nancy! There were 70 travelers on this ski trip and I must say all of you were fantastic! You make being a trip leader fun and easy and I'd love to do it again.

Mt Bachelor 2016

Waiting for input from trip leaders.

I am pleased to report that the combined Orlando Ski Club/Space Coast Ski & Travel Club race team placed 2nd in the Fun Race at Mt Bachelor! Our four fastest racers were:

1. Matt Bragaw (SCSTC))
2. Meloni Turk (OSC)
3. Jackie Warren (OSC)
4. Roy Walters (OSC)

Also competing for our team were:

Karen Bettencourt (SCSTC)
Jim Johnson (OSC)
Terry Sauer (SCSTC)
Kenton Anz (SCSTC)
Tracy Meyer (OSC)
Dave Morris (OSC)
Rodger Sebben (OSC)
Terri-Lynn Smith (OSC)

In addition to a 2nd place team finish, Meloni Turk won top honors for the Fastest Woman racer.

On Thursday a Vertical Challenge competition was announced by Ann Cook, Director of Sales for the Doubletree, our host hotel. Interested competitors were asked to register through an app or web site to have their "vert" tracked for the day. There were some amazing single day vertical records established. Roy Walters and Jim Johnson both recorded over 34,000feet. However, our own Kenny Krumins blew everyone away with his recorded 57,511 vertical feet in a single day! And that includes time spent hiking out of an area when a lift had mechanical problems and had to be shut down.

Way to go, Kenny "Ironman" Krumins!

Thanks to my group,
Shelley Daniel, Trip Leader
Mt Bachelor

From Space Coast Ski & Travel Club

SCSTC partnered with OSC taking ten of our members to Mt Bachelor.  Joining forces with our Central Florida neighbors allowed us to really get to know each other.  All of the Space Coasters felt our ski trip was enhanced by sharing the slopes and parties with new friends.  Both clubs offers great trips and but it was fun to see how things are done a little differently yet with all the same enthusiasm.  Together, we had more fun and camaraderie throughout the week.  Here’s hoping more FSC clubs partner on trips when the opportunity arises.  I know SCSTC will team up with OSC in the future as it was a win/win formula and a complete success.
