President's Message

Hello Fellow Skiers,

I hope you all have survived those ghost and goblins. A good “scare” can be fun (sometimes). There is nothing scary about the Orlando Ski Club’s (OSC) ski trips. All these trips are going to be fun. Well, there might be one thing that can scare us skiers. It is when we get on those skis for the first time in over a year. Just trying to get your legs (and brain) to remember how to ski can be scary and frustrating. Fortunately, there is a new business in town that will opening in the next few days that can help reduce or eliminate those early ski slope jitters, and allow us to have more fun skiing around those “snow ghosts!”

On Monday, November 2nd, Kathryn Hardage (VP of Trips), Steve Clark (Vail Trip Leader) and I (The Snow Dog) spent some time at Winter Club Ski (WCS), which offers skiing lessons. WCS is located at 2950 Aloma Avenue, Winter Park, FL 32792, just west of 436 (i.e. corner of Aloma and Ranger). The facility has two (2) artificial slopes and a virtual skiing machine, which allows you to ski numerous ski resorts. Kathryn and Steve got a chance to try out their machines and came away really impressed. Check out their website at

This Saturday, November 7th, WCS will be holding a “soft” opening. They have invited our Club members (and other local sport clubs) to check out their facility. The event starts at 11:00 am and lasts until “?”. The Snow Dog plans to be there at 11:00 am till “?” Although they have boots, skis, helmets, and snowboards for you to use, you are welcome to bring your own equipment. (I recommend you bring a good pair of socks;-)) Their “official opening” is scheduled for Saturday, November 14th. So, our club members get the first opportunity to check out this facility.

The OSC is excited to have this facility in the area. What a great place to do a “skills” tune up before going on your ski trip. Or, for those members that have not gone skiing for a few years, a great place to get a few lessons before the ski trip. Many of us feel the first day is wasted just getting use to skiing again. Now we can have more fun on the “first” day.

There is one final item. WCS has asked OSC to recommend to them some of our better skiers. They need more full-time and part-time ski instructors to help them give lessons. If you think you might be interested in doing this, please give them a call, or better yet come to the “soft” opening this Saturday.

Please note there are still open spots for the Truffles and Trifles (November 12th) and tickets for the Broadway Show – Kinky Boots. There is always more to do with the OSC than just skiing.

This month, Wednesday, Nov. 11th, 6-8pm, the OSC will be doing a Social at Miller’s Ale House, Winter Park Villages (corner of Lee Road and 17/92). The Club has reserved the House’s East Patio. I sure hope you can attend.

Hope to see each of you this Saturday (7th) at Winter Club Ski and at the November’s Social.
