Hello Fellow Skiers,
As of the publication of this Orlando Ski Club’s February 2016 Newsletter, the Club has had two successful ski trips (Vail & Whistler), and this year’s largest ski trip (based on trip participants) getting ready to leave for Snowmass this Saturday, February 6th. It is really exciting to be in the midst of ski season. The Whistler ski trip was a FSC (Florida Ski Council) trip, which means it includes “club ski team racing.” I am thrilled to inform you the following OSC racers won medals for fastest time in their age bracket:
Men Age 20-29
Chad Ryan (27.72)
Men Age 40-49
Jeff Szarzanowicz (20.85)
Men Age 50-59
Todd Bauerle (18.97)
Florida Cup Team Placement*
3rd Place - Orlando Ski Club
*Based on cumulative times for 3 fastest men and 3 fastest women from each club.
Florida Cup OSC race team medalists: Todd Bauerle, Jeff Szarzanowicz, David Miller, JP Carraway, Debbie Ashworth, LeeAnne Trimble
It is good to see that the old guys can still scoot quickly down a slalom course. Congratulations to the OSC Team for doing great! And a big “WOW”, to Todd Bauerle for being the “fastest man” on the slope.
The January OSC Social was held at Winter Club Indoor Ski & Snowboard (WCS), 2950 Aloma Ave., Winter Park, FL. The Club had a really good turnout for this event, with everyone having a great time. There were more than a few Club members that were impressed with the equipment at WCS, because they signed up for lessons. (BTW, the Whistler trip had their pre-trip party at WCS.) The Club will be going back to WCS for Social/Meeting sometime in the near future.
As a side note, the Snow Dog (at age 59) decided to take snowboarding lessons at WCS. Although I tried snowboarding over 10 years ago (and gave it up), I thought “Why not try again?” There were moments during the lesson it appeared I was renewing my limit snowboarding skills. There were also moments during the lesson that were... not pretty to watch. There is one thing I can state with absolute surety, learning to snowboard at WCS is much less “painful” than learning to snowboard on a ski slope;-)
Several are Club members will be going to the Broadway Show – Kinky Boots, Sunday February 28th. We have sold out of the tickets, thanks to the hard work of Debbie Ashworth. Remember, there is always more to do with the OSC than just skiing.
The Club’s Travel Committee has started their meeting to determine what ski resorts we should be going in 2017! If you have a recommendation for a ski trip, please contact our 1st VP of Trips, Kathryn Hardage, firstname.lastname@example.org.
The February Social will be at Miller’s Ale House, Winter Park Villages (corner of Lee Road and 17/92), Wednesday, Feb. 10th, 6-8pm. I hope to see you there!!!
Wishing You Many Happy Dreams of Gently Falling Snowflakes, and Groomed Slopes!
Bob “Snow Dog” Mackey
